an arson investigation on the peninsular, a suspicious early morning fire, lorraine has been out there all morning from the fire scene, lorraine? >> reporter: fire investigators are on the scene right now and they are interviewing potential witnesses this morning because they think this fire was set deliberately. they want to make sure clues are collected without any disturbance. the hurley morning -- early morning fire started with five cars on fire at the same time. the flames spread from the car port to the building at 2:00 a.m.ment for now the whole -- for now the whole building is vacant and the building was evacuated and everybody got out safely. >> it made our job much easier at that point.

we sheltering the local community center and six people are displaced by the fire in the heavily damaged units. >> the -- >> reporter: the american red cross is helping families and arson investigators are expecting to spend most of the morning out here. lorraine blanco ktvu channel 2 morning news. a 17-year-old boy was shot and killed right in front of an elementary school in san jose. he was walking outside of rocket ship elementary school and he was shot several times there and died at the scene. this happened 6:20 in the evening and neighbors say a lot of gang activity happens in the area but there is still no motive known and no arrests have been made. there is a case of missing morgan hill teen sierra lemar. her parents will increase the

reward and in april the reward jumped from $10,000 to 2 5,000 and the criteria changed to include finding her or any information leading to the prosecution or finding those responsible for her disappearance. the search will soon begin. they are questioning pg&e's response to the natural gas-x motion that -- natural gas explosion which caused a big fire. a gas line was ruptured while a construction worker was working. gas flowed uncontrolled for almost two hours as firefighters battled those flames. >> pg&e was challenged to try and determine the location of the shut off. they had to breach the concrete

. a mexican drug cartel reportedly laundered a million dollars a month through bets on horse racing. they arrested 7 people including the head of that drug cartel. they said the drug cartel purchased american quarter horses. they named the horses after drug cartels and they won several races. new this morning, syrian state television says they have retake enroll of the village of halfer after eight days of clashes with rebel fighters.

and say good morning to you, this is ktvu channel 2 morning news, wednesday june 13th, i am dave clark. >> and i am pam cook, time now 6:30 testimony. the the fire on the overnight peninsular has now triggered and arson investigation. it caused a lot of damage to a redwood apartment complex. lorraine blanco has been out there since 4:30, what do you know lorraine? >> reporter: well arson investigators and police investigators are on the scene right now and if you take a look at the scene, the investigation is going on right behind that in the car port area. investigators found a few things by the cars that make it look suspicious. the early morning fire started up to five cars burning at the same time and you can see it looks like a graveyard and fires spread from the car port

to the apartment above at 2:20 a.m. there is fire and water damage so the whole apartment is evacuated. everybody got out safely and the fire marshall tells me everybody is completely out and fire investigators are still hard at working. >> everybody is picking through what they see, what they get from witnesses and put all that together with the pieces and they get a puzzle together. >> red cross is helping families with food and shelter. >> reporter: as for the cars, five were destroyed but now investigators are looking at everything in daylight and now they say almost a dozen cars have some damage. reporting live lorraine blanco ktvu channel 2 morning news. firefighters called in investigators to figure out how the fire started.

they say nobody was inside but somebody was living in the home and they called in the red cross to help the person who lives there once they find that person. time now 6:30, they are talking about the controversial plan to ban sitting on sidewalks. critics of the idea held this rally outside city hall and they called for the right to sit down from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 at night. violaters could be fined $50. >> if you want to pass a law to criminalize homeless people sitting on the sidewalk, just do it. if you want to give police a tool to harass them, just do it. >> we would like to bring these people sitting on the streets

hour ago. getting out of his lawyer's car he quickly went inside the courtroom. he showed no emotion when a former assistant football coach testified he saw jerry sandusky sod mizing a young boy in the showers. another boy testified he was assaulted through a four-year span beginning at age 11. they weighed evidence for about 15 minutes before being dismissed for the day. the trial included 26 days of testimony from 46 witnesses. the former baseball star is accused of lying to a congressional committee when he said he never used steroids. clemens wife and four sons watched from the second row of the courtroom. this morning, 11 nurses at bay area hospitals are preparing to walk off the job. joining us now with the

proposed cuts that would put the safety of nurses and patients at risk, tara? >> reporter: well nurses have just started to arrive and they are ready to go across the street from where we are standing. more than 4400 nurses are expected to go on strike and one of the hospitals is here in oakland. they held similar walk outs and their contract expired last summer. nurses are upset because the company wants to take away portions of their long standing contracts. sutter health wants unprecedented cuts in sick leave and healthcare benefits. >> to not demand nurses spend for their own health, imagine a hospital that does not think nurses should be able to have healthcare for themselves or their families, that is disgraceful. >> reporter: sutter says nurses on average make $136,000 a

year. >> the union is asking for costly benefits, like free healthcare for life that would increase the cost of healthcare for patients by millions of dollars. >> nurses say that is not true. sutter has rehired replacement nurses and contracting nurses will not be able to return to working right away. live in oakland. i am tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 morning news. new details in fremont. more people lost their jobs than first thought when that solar manufacturer shut down in august. they showed 1900 workers were let go according to the report in the bay citizens. previously it was reported that 100 workers were laid off and that figure did not take into account 800 people with positions that were filled by contractors and some other workers there. >> san jose city council

approved a pension plan for city workers. but city workers after july 1st will have to pay half. that according to the mercury news and they also voted to give retirees the option of a lower cost healthcare plan which the city will save more than $10 million a year. the changes come one week after san jose voters approved pension reform measures b. sal, how is the commute looking? >> i was just looking at my computer and there are some power lines down and we had a report from one of our viewers who said it could affect the courthouse in that area as well. winston area near the santa clara courthouse, make sure you are on time for your appearance, i don't think the judge will by that.

leading to the prosecution of those responsible for her disappearance. following this morning's announcement, a new search for the 15-year-old will begin. also today, the ethic's committee will take care of several legal matters in the sheriff ross mirkarimi case. the panel will set the final legal ground rules for determining the fate of suspended san francisco sheriff. supervisors will ultimately decide whether sheriff ross mirkarimi will permanently be removed from office. once again sheriff ross mirkarimi's wife is trying to extend her stay in venezuela. they left san francisco with the couple's three-year-old son to care for her sick father. the latest deadline is to return home saturday and they are expected to ask the court for a second extension to remain in venezuela for a few

more months. the man suspected of killing three people near auburn university has surrendered and may appear in court today. that suspect turned himself in, in montgomery pennsylvania. he was charged with assault for shooting at an apartment complex and two auburn football players died in that shooting. it was a dispute over a sacred native american burial ground. they were protesting a proposed trail and we will hear more on why they will be back at the center of the controversy this weekend. a toddler in texas is recovering from minor injuries this morning after being rejected from an suv during a high-speed chase. this is new video of that crash

and you can see the 18 months old -- look at that, she had been thrown from the car, there she is getting up on to her feet, somebody grabs her a woman inside the suv jumped up and got her out of the road. the toddler's father was wanted for robbery, both he and the baby's mother were arrested. let's go back to sal. what is going on in hayward sal? well we have a power line down and it looks like the poll -- something happened to it or it broke and you can see the power lines are down between santa clara street and right near the courthouse community development center and just a lot of county buildings there and we do have a little bit of a traffic jam ensuing because of this power lines down and we also have a power outage.

if you know somebody in hayward in this area, you may want to give them a wakeup call. they may not be getting their alarm this morning. sometimes they can watch our homes on mobile devices and your regular power will be restored. and again maybe these people are not watching us. let's look at the commute westbound bay bridge, traffic is backed up all the way to the army base over crossing. and this morning in san jose, the only problem we have had is northbound 101 near allan rock which has been moved to the shoulder already. the fog is back, we just had a couple of tweets coming in, i try to remember too much. 56, overcast. the fog is coming up.

really there is not much fog, a lot more than we have seen the last couple of mornings that is for sure. although the sonoma case looks good, and that's not the case for santa cruz county and drizzle around the bay, sunny and breezy, patchy clouds, it will be sunny, cooler still on the warm side, 80s instead of 90s, the system moved into the north, and it is more pronounced this morning, up in beau canon, the delta breeze is in place, southwest at the napa airport, cooler direction from low 50s and these are much cooler than the past couple of mornings. there is the system, you can see it moving into seattle and high pressure will start to come back by friday. winds will pick up, much of the

higher elevations will definitely help cool and also 60s and 79 walnut creek, brentwood is one of the warmer location livermore 81 and 84 morgan hill, fremont, sunny veil, low-to-mid 70s on most of the peninsular and upper 60s and 70s and 50s and 60s on the coast. thursday and friday it does look sunny breezy and much warmer as we go to the weekend. commerce report shows u.s. sales are down even after excluded volatile sales went up slightly last month and that suggests small job growth may be leading consumers to pull back again. done with its makeovers, today marks the end of a five year $1 billion overhaul to correct problems at the park.

. welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news, i want to take you live to wall street dow jones industrial average down to 12511 and a lot of focus on jp morgan chase, they are saying an apology is not enough because it is affecting stock markets. coming up, we may see the biggest additions to internet addresses since the 1980s.

the corporation for assigned names and numbers will announce new domain numbers, they include dot bank, dot krystal boothe and dot l o l. it will be two more years before we see them in active use. they are making plans to develop the old army base. it was a major sea port for the military and city leaders have called it a potential economic goldmine. one company wants to turn it into a warehouse and logistics hub. the city council will vote next tuesday and if it's not done quickly they could lose money in state funding. california voters will decide whether to require special labels for janetly modified -- genetically modified foods. this week the secretary of state certified the measure for
